The Solution

By bioengineering C. reinhardtii using the CRISPR/Cas9 method we will be able to biodegrade P.E.T. in environments where it is found. Using the Biocycler, biodegrading plastic will become a reality! The Biocycler is a specially designed dark composter where C. reinhardtii will biodegrade plastic. The Biocycler looks like a normal trash can with a round touchpad at the top of the lid. This will be used to see how full the container is and how long the process of biodegrading the plastic will last. Everybody would supposedly have a Bioclycler in their homes, making plastic pollution easier to decrease.
